What Makes a Dog Collar Heavy Duty?

Most collars fail at one of three points: the buckle, the webbing or the ring. A heavy duty dog collar from Miles Tactical fixes all three of these.
• We use Metal buckles, not plastic. Plastic side-release clips crack in cold weather and can break open under a hard lunge. Our collars use an aluminium side-release buckle or on our Cobra collar we use a  7075 aluminium AustriAlpin Cobra buckle with a high strength rating.
• Custom thick tactical webbing. We use 1.5″ to 2″ wide nylon military webbing on the Cobra collar. Wider webbing spreads pressure across your dog’s neck and resists fraying and chewing.
• Stainless steel hardware. Our triangle/V-rings are made of 304 stainless steel, not the plated zinc used on budget collars, so they won’t rust, bend or snap. On our latest version, the V-ring also has built-in tag attachment points so ID tags don’t rattle loose or get in the way of the leash.

Cobra Collar or Tactical Collar?

Choose the Cobra Buckle collar if your dog does bite work, protection training or serious hauling, or if you simply want the strongest buckle made. The Cobra buckle only releases when both side tabs are squeezed together, so it can’t open by accident.

What is the strongest dog collar?
A collar is only as strong as its weakest part, usually the buckle. The AustriAlpin Cobra buckle on our Cobra Buckle Dog Collar is rated to a minimum of 4,000 lbs, far beyond the force any dog can generate. Paired with thick military webbing and a 304 stainless V-ring, it’s one of the strongest collars you can buy.
Are cobra buckle collars safe?
Yes, when fitted correctly. A Cobra buckle can’t open by accident: it releases only when both side tabs are squeezed together. That also makes it slower to remove in an emergency, so practise opening it, and never leave any collar with a handle on an unsupervised dog in a crate or around fences where the handle could snag. The buckles are used by astronauts and mountain climbers in critical situations.
What size heavy duty collar does my dog need?
Measure around the thickest part of the neck, then check our size chart above. You should fit two fingers flat under the collar. If your dog falls between sizes, choose the larger size.
Is a wider collar better for big dogs?
For strong pullers, yes. A 1.5″ to 2″ collar spreads pressure over more of the neck than a thin 1″ collar, which is more comfortable when your dog hits the end of the leash. For everyday wear, a thinner collar will be better and more comfortable for your dog.
Can my dog wear a tactical collar every day?
For collars without handle, yes. Our collars are built for daily wear. The nylon webbing is washable and won’t stretch, rot or stiffen like leather when wet. For training or a day out the collars with handle are preferred.
Can I add an ID patch or AirTag?
The Cobra Buckle collar has a loop Velcro panel for name, “K9” or “Do Not Pet” patches. Both collars have tag attachment points on the stainless V-ring for ID tags or a tag-style tracker holder. Some tag holders can attach directly to the velcro for a quieter solution.
How do I clean a nylon dog collar?
Hand-wash in warm, soapy water, rinse and air-dry. Brush the Velcro with an old toothbrush to clear hair. Don’t put it in the dryer.
